Reach Care & Support provide a comfortable environment for care leavers, homeless teenagers and unaccompanied asylum-seeking children aged 16 to 24 years of age. For these young people, a safe, nurturing home bridges the gap between childhood and adulthood and helps prepares them for the challenges of living independently. We believe that regardless of their beginnings, every young person has the right to learn essential life skills and to flourish with their unique talents and personality. Reach Care & Support work to support them in reaching those goals.
A home is more than just somewhere to live. For many of us, it’s a place to feel safe as we navigate the world. Yet, this isn’t the case for many young people in the UK. Youth homelessness affects hundreds of thousands of people each year. This issue, notably amongst those leaving the care system, continues to be underserved – particularly when addressing the risk amongst those from BME communities.
Reach Care & Support assesses each young person’s needs in order to create a pathway plan to enable them to develop and maintain respect, self-reliance and self-care skills. This plan gives them the tools to make informed, age-appropriate decisions concerning their present and future, so they can achieve a successful transition into independence and adulthood.
Our approach is that of a “nurturing parent” and as such we function to provide structure, encouragement and guidance together with emotional warmth. We also value the importance of our young people improving and maintaining positive links to their family relationships and will support them to further cultivate those connections.
While forging a strong, trusting relationship with our young people, we provide key working sessions, mentoring and a range of specialised services to help them grow on their pathways.
Launched in August 2020, Reach Care & Support was born of a real passion to assist young people who have experienced challenges very early on in life, and allow them to learn, grow and succeed. We’re committed to doing our part to tackle youth homelessness, and not only provide young people with a place to sleep, but with a safe, supportive environment where they can access the services they need and deserve.
Purpose and Power – We want each person in our care to gain the tools to discover themselves and start to grow into who they are as adults. We want to empower them with confidence and the belief that no matter their beginnings, they can make an impact in the world.
We respect every young person we work with, and want their respect too. We work to build a relationship where those in our care are not only considerate towards us but learn and understand the importance of respecting the place they live in and other forms of authority they will come across in life.
We believe in acknowledging the cultural backgrounds of our young people. We work to provide care and solutions that are sensitive to cultural customs as well as doing our best to ensure those in our homes remain connected to their community, where possible, as a source of comfort and sense of self.
We exist to create a safe space where young people can feel settled. This grounding and support from our staff gives them the opportunity to work through any issues they may have and learn the skills to grow into young adults who will not only survive, but thrive.
On arriving at a REACH home, all young people will receive a designated support worker to assist with:
Young people leaving Reach Care & Support homes and transitioning to living independently will have access to our three-month mentoring program. A Reach Care & Support leaving Mentor can assist in continuing to develop the confidence and essential skills required to live autonomously. If requested, our mentors can advocate on the young person’s behalf at meetings and appointments.
